99 Words – The One Who Left The Dress

THE RULES:

August 8, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about “the one who left the dress.” A 1940s-era dress still hangs in an abandoned house. Who left it and why? You can take any perspective and write in any genre. It can be a ghost story. Or not. Go where the prompt leads!

MY CONTRIBUTION:

Closets are small or non-existant, most of us don’t have a lot of clothes. My sister, brother and I share a dresser, we each have one drawer and the 4th is everyone’s socks.

Except for the closet under the stairs which has some clothes that no one wears.

Who gave us those things?

Why has mama never worn this blue dress, did this belong to her sister who died after getting so sick.

Was she afraid the dress would make her sick too and she would have to move away?

The doctor said grandma is doing very well today.

99 Words – Swarm For Bees

Carrot Ranch weekly challenge is to write this in 99 words. Based on this weeks prompt of – swarm.

Photo by Piotr Wojnowski on Pexels.com

When 2,000 people show up to protest or support that could be considered a swarm. Like bees swarm and move out of a hive when it is no longer safe maybe people need to do more swarming.

In the 60’s and 70’s protests were everywhere. I only attended one and it was pretty harmless for ZPG. Never have I seen a swarm of bees but maybe they need us to swarm now for them. Let’s plan a human swarm to protect bees habitat. Okay who’s with me lets swarm a parking lot and cover it with bee friendly flowers.

Carry On

It may just be time to carry on, not sure, my life feels like it’s a state of limbo, not here nor there just is. How do you move on from years being completely motionless and no place in sight to recover. Carry on.

What do I need to carry, my history, my future, my family? Carry on.

If I am not ready what’s my outcome. Left alone. Stay behind. Lie down.

Don’t you cry or sleep. Carry on.

Pack it in. Carry on.

Time to lead the way for others to follow. Carry on.

No choices. Carry on.

99 Words – What Meltdown

Not sure if I ever really had one, stiff upper lip and all that drivel. As a child it was certainly not allowed by my mother. Maybe I was never allowed to have expectations that would make me feel special or wanted. Other than get good grades.

An adult now, so I get to set the standards, but how does that feel I’ve no idea. Real feelings hurt too much so lets not go there. A true meltdown might be a good thing. I watch as global-warming melts glaciers. Maybe I can melt myself enough to feel real once?

Observe cats from a long distance always so they can’t take control of your mind, especially if she plays with rainbows.

I watched our cat, Rainbow, playing with the tail end of a rainbow once and she has taken control of me. I now serve her food in the good dishes and never run out of treats. Her yarn ball is always handy to roll and the dog must allow room for her in my bed. Life is not the same.

Would anyone ever pick a cat with stripes of red/orange, yellow/brown. Not I, well maybe just once more.

Jack – 99 words

Somehow I know this will be my year. Jack came into my life during the pandemic and I could not help but fall in love with all the time we spent together. This could be my second chance at fulfilling all my fondest wishes.

Registration rules require that I call him “Hit The Road Jack” instead of just the Jack that I wanted. I just know this is my year to win the Kentucky Derby and Jack will be the one. I see it now the roses draped across the neck.

Alarm rings, must get up for work now.

Red-headed Jenny

Jenny was tall for a woman, 5’6″, when we were friends she was always the tallest one around yet she loved the highest stilettos she could find. Days she worked as a clerk in a small shop and she danced her nights away at a club with live music.

How did she manage to head this billion dollar company. From the time she was 15, shortly after her mother died, she had one kind of business or another. Each business taught her some valuable lessons and one was to appear to be head and shoulders above everyone. Shoes gave her strength.

Chores – Flash Fiction

October 15, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about chores. It doesn’t have to be a western ranch chore; it can be any routine task. Go where the prompt leads!

99 Words of Chores

Never called chores in my house as a child, just the price you paid for the joy of living here. We were a house full of people, 10 plus the birds. Saturday chores/baths/laundry day. Descriptions on a paper slip went into the chore jar.  Oldest picked first. We all watched and secretly cheered when our least-liked was gone. Today I have the dining room, dust 1st, then sweep next wash the floor. Now my favorite, polish the wood, I still like the smell of the polish on wood. Funny how a smell brings a happy memory to a tough time.

99 Word Challenge Snacks

September 24, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about snacking. It can feature crunchy snacks or creamy one. Who is snacking on what and why? How can you make this a story? Go where the prompt leads!

September 24: Flash Fiction Challenge

Road Snacks Are Special

Snacks are serious.  No idea when they developed this attitude but they wear the crown well.  Road trip snacks are in special categories while still having the requirement of being bad junk food.  Healthy snacks don’t live in this world. Trip snacks require a salty brand of chips, chocolate that does not melt, caffeine drink and something with peanut butter.

In my vehicle this is a well proven larder that can sustain me for days.  In the past my excuse was mid-west winters that could be brutal.  Now this is just one of those grandfathered laws of my car.

First Flight

August 13, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about a first flight. It can be anything or anyone that flies. What is significant about the first? Go where the prompt leads!

Here is my contribution for this week.

I’m taking the early first flight out this morning. Handy trick learned years ago that allow options if I miss it. DC is ugly hot this summer. Today’s assignment is to meet an old friend for lunch. Twenty years is a long time, I wonder how he’s changed. Will he know me? My job today is simply gathering information on what’s next years hot clothing color. How does a nice girl from Kansas get in the spy business? Should I have married that farmer? On my flight there is a familiar face in the next seat. “Hi I’m Dorothy.”
